Dental Health Aide Program

Dental Health Aides expand access to oral health care in tribal
and rural communities through prevention, education, and a wide
range of clinical services.

What is the Dental Health Aide Program?

Alaska’s Tribal Health System educates and employs multiple levels of Dental Health Aides, including Primary Dental Health Aides, Expanded Function Dental Health Aides, Dental Health Aide Hygienists, and Dental Health Aide Therapists. 

Together, they provide prevention, patient education, restorative procedures, and emergency procedures under the supervision of dentists.

Primary Dental Health Aides (PDHA)

Expanded Function Dental Health Aides (EFDHA)

Dental Health Aide Hygienists (DHAH)

Dental Health Aide Therapists/ Practitioners (DHAT/DHATPs)

Dental Health Aide Levels of Practice

There are four DHA levels recognized by the CHAP Certification Board, each with specific training, preceptorship, and scope of practice.
